Gun Cleaning Patches Buying Guide: Material, Size and Bulk Packaging
Cleaning patches are the razor blades of the gun care business: customers consume them by the hundred and come back for more. That makes them the easiest repeat-purchase SKU to add to a catalog — but also the easiest to get wrong. Three decisions decide whether your patch SKU sells or sits.
1. Material: cotton, synthetic, or silicone-treated
100% cotton is the default for bore patches: absorbent, lint-free when cut on-grain, safe on all barrel finishes. Our 2000-piece cotton patch pack is the bulk workhorse for high-volume shooters and range programs.
Thickened / higher GSM cotton holds shape under the jag and does not tear at the muzzle. For retail shelves, "thicker" is a visible, explainable selling point — it is what our 1000-piece thickened pack leads with.
Silicone-treated cloths solve a different job: final wipe-down of exterior metal to leave a thin protective film that displaces fingerprints and moisture. They are a premium add-on rather than a consumable, sold as individual 12"×12" cloths or multi-packs — and because each cloth is sealed in its own pouch, they ship and shelve without drying out.
2. Size: match the bore, not the customer's guess
A patch should fully fill the bore under the jag with slight pressure. As a rule for retail assortments:
- 1.25" – 1.75" — .17 to .25 cal small bores and airguns
- 2" – 2.5" — the workhorse range covering most pistol and rifle centerfire calibers (9mm to .45, .223 to .30-06)
- 3" — 12GA / 20GA shotgun and large-bore rifles
If you only stock one size for a mixed catalog, 2" × 2" covers the widest range — which is why our 2" round patches are the fastest-moving SKU in the category for ecommerce sellers.
3. Packaging: bulk bag vs canister vs retail box
Bulk bags (1000–2000 pcs) serve high-volume shooters, ranges and resellers who repack. Canister dispensers add perceived value on retail shelves and protect patches from dust. Retail boxes are the private-label play: your logo, your barcode, your assortment. All three formats run on the same production line, so you can build a small ladder of SKUs (value / standard / premium) from one product family.
4. What to check before ordering
- Cut quality: laser or die-cut, no loose fibers at the edge
- GSM weight and tolerance — this is what "thickened" actually means, ask for the spec
- Caliber size chart printed on packaging (reduces returns and support questions)
- MOQ flexibility for a first order while you test demand
